「SRAN, Draped in Time」 is a fashion exhibition that explores the relationship between past and present, tradition and technology, by reinterpreting Sran, a decorative element of traditional Korean dress, within contemporary fashion and visualizing it through generative AI. Historically, Sran referred to elaborately patterned decorative bands applied to the lower part of a hanbok skirt, often signifying status and formality. In this exhibition, however, Sran is reimagined as a visual medium connecting different eras and generations. By combining the traditional patterns and aesthetics of Sran with contemporary silhouettes, materials, and details, the exhibition seeks not simply to reproduce tradition, but to propose a new way of wearing tradition as clothing of the present.
Using generative AI, these contemporary garments are visualized on people of different ages. As time passes, hair changes color, skin develops new textures, and the body gradually transforms. Yet the garments adorned with Sran remain relevant to each individual, regardless of age. Through this juxtaposition, the exhibition asks: Should age or appearance define what we are allowed to wear or how we express ourselves? Moving beyond fashion imagery that often privileges youth, the work suggests that clothing and self-expression need not be limited by age.
In this creative process, generative AI is used not simply as a technology for reproducing reality, but as a creative medium capable of moving freely across time and generations to construct new fashion imagery. The process itself—where Sran, an element rooted in the past, encounters contemporary fashion and is then reimagined through one of today’s most advanced image-generation technologies—becomes another attempt to connect the past, present, and future.
At the same time, the exhibition questions the tendency for Korean traditional dress to remain preserved and reproduced primarily as something belonging to the past. Tradition does not have to exist as a fixed form that must remain unchanged. When it encounters contemporary aesthetics and new technologies and is continually reinterpreted and transformed, it can remain a living culture within the present. When the sran of the past encounters the clothing of today and is newly placed on bodies across generations through generative AI, the boundaries between tradition and modernity, human and technology, and youth and age begin to dissolve—connecting once again within a continuous flow of time.
「時間をまとうスラン（Sran, Draped in Time）」は、韓国の伝統衣装に用いられてきた装飾要素である「スラン（膝襴）」を現代の衣服に取り入れ、さらに生成AIによって視覚化することで、過去と現在、伝統とテクノロジーの関係を探求するファッション展である。かつて韓服（ハンボク）のチマ（スカート）を華やかな文様で彩ったスランは、身分や格式を示す装飾でもあった。本展では、それを時代と世代をつなぐ一つの視覚的な媒体として新たに解釈する。伝統的なスランの文様や造形性を、現代的なシルエット、素材、ディテールと融合させることで、伝統をそのまま再現するのではなく、「今を生きる服」として新たにまとう方法を提案する。
作品に登場する現代服は、生成AIを活用し、さまざまな年代の人物に着用させることで視覚化されている。時間の経過とともに髪の色や肌の質感、身体の姿は変化していく。しかし、スランをまとった服は、年齢にかかわらず、それぞれの人の「現在」とともに存在する。そこから本展は、年齢や外見が、着る服を選び、自分自身を表現するうえでの境界であるべきなのかという問いを投げかける。若さに偏りがちなファッションのイメージから離れ、服を着ること、そして自分らしさを表現することに年齢の制限はないというメッセージを伝えようとする。
この創作過程において、生成AIは現実を単に再現するための技術ではなく、時間や世代を自由に行き来しながら、新たなファッションイメージを構築するための創作メディアとして用いられている。過去に根ざした伝統的な要素であるスランが現代のファッションと出会い、さらに今日の先端的な画像生成技術であるAIによって新たに表現される。そのプロセス自体が、過去・現在・未来をつなぐもう一つの試みとなっている。
同時に本展は、韓国の伝統衣装がしばしば「過去のもの」として保存され、再現されることにとどまっている現状にも問いを投げかける。伝統とは、変わることなく守られるべき固定された形式ではない。現代の美意識や新しい技術と出会い、絶えず新たに解釈され、変化していくことで、今を生きる文化として存在し続けることができる。過去のスランが今日の服と出会い、生成AIを通して異なる世代の身体の上に新たに置かれるとき、伝統と現代、人間とテクノロジー、そして年齢という境界は、一つの時間の流れの中で再びつながっていく。
